Documents needed for a domicile certificate
Updated July 2026 · 4 min read

A domicile — or residence — certificate proves you have lived in a state long enough to claim its quotas in jobs and college admissions. It is issued by your state's revenue authority, so the exact requirements differ; the list below is what most states ask for.
Proof of identity
- Aadhaar card
- Voter ID or PAN card, where accepted
Proof of residence
You generally need to show continuous residence for a minimum period — often three to fifteen years depending on the state.
- Ration card listing you at the address
- Electricity, water or property tax receipt
- Rent agreement together with the owner's proof, if you rent
- School or college records showing the same address
Proof of date of birth
- 10th marksheet, or
- Birth certificate issued by the municipal authority
What usually goes wrong
- The address on the residence proof does not match the address written on the form
- The applicant's name differs between Aadhaar and the 10th marksheet
- The residence proof is too recent to establish the required period
